What Is Chichen Itza?
The ancient city of Chichen Itza was the most important capital city of the Mayans during the Classic Period (AD 600 – 750). Many of the city’s ancient ruins still stand to this day – including the famed El Castillo or Temple of Kukulcán, a massive step pyramid that dominates the city’s center.
The stunning Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza are located deep in the Yucatan jungle and have been designated an UNESCO World Heritage site. In 2001, Chichen Itza was also named one of the “New 7 Wonders of the World.”
